There are so many different areas of study for students to major in during college. Educating yourself and understanding your options for study, the commitments they require, and if a graduate degree is recommended before you commit to your major can be a huge help.
The purpose of this series is to shine a light on the variety of majors most universities have to offer. Not all universities offer the same majors, so research beforehand to ensure your field of study is available at your school.
Computer and Information Systems
Computers are more than just tools for searching Amazon and writing papers; they are powerful tools that can be used to build, evaluate, sort, and store data. An education on computer and information systems would begin with introductory level courses that cover the basics of database systems, how they process information and what they can be used for. Over time, these courses will increase in difficulty and may allow students to build their own systems to design and evaluate specific data for different projects.
If your student is comfortable, capable, and excited about technology, this career may be an excellent path for them to look into. A healthy understanding of math and technology will be helpful, as math and statistics courses will be required to understand the programs. Computer and Information System studies include learning different programming languages and computing topics, which can be very useful in working in cybersecurity, another defense many companies need.
Typical careers in computer and information systems include computer systems analysts, information security analysts, database administrators, systems managers, and management analysts. These are all positions that are highly sought after in the job force today, as many companies typically have case collections of data growing exponentially, and are in need of educated professionals who have the skills and understanding to organize, understand, and protect it.
